Dallas — The Dallas Mavericks have designated rookie forward Cooper Flagg as doubtful for Thursday night’s home matchup with the Utah Jazz because of a left ankle sprain.
Flagg, the first overall pick in last year’s draft, hurt the ankle with 6:01 remaining in the second quarter of Wednesday’s loss to the Denver Nuggets while defending Peyton Watson on a drive. After being whistled for a foul, he limped directly to the locker room accompanied by athletic trainer Jana Austin.
The 19-year-old briefly returned with 2:35 left in the quarter but was seen grimacing several times before sitting out the entire second half. The Mavericks announced early in the third quarter that he had been ruled out for the remainder of the game.
According to the team, this is the second straight contest in which Flagg has rolled the same ankle; he played through Monday’s win over the Brooklyn Nets after having it re-taped. The only other game he has missed this season came on Nov. 19 against the New York Knicks because of illness.
Rookie Campaign
Flagg is averaging 18.8 points, 6.4 rebounds and 4.2 assists, making him a leading candidate for Rookie of the Year honors.
A final decision on his availability for Thursday will be made after pregame treatment and evaluation.
