Wizards Acquire Four-Time All-Star Trae Young in First Trade of 2025-26 NBA Season

WASHINGTON, Jan. 7, 2026 — The Washington Wizards have landed point guard Trae Young in the opening trade of the 2025-26 NBA transaction period, sending guards CJ McCollum and Corey Kispert to the Atlanta Hawks.
Young, a four-time All-Star, leaves Atlanta after seven seasons with the franchise that selected him fifth overall in the 2018 draft. The 27-year-old averaged 24.9 points and 9.6 assists last season.
In return, Atlanta receives veteran scorer McCollum and sharpshooting forward Kispert. McCollum, 34, posted 17.2 points per game for Washington in 2024-25, while Kispert, 26, contributed 10.8 points and shot 39.8% from three-point range.
The move marks the first completed deal of the current NBA trade window, which is expected to remain active ahead of next month’s deadline.
