EL SEGUNDO, Calif. — The Los Angeles Lakers expect LeBron James to remain out for another three to four weeks because of sciatica affecting the right side of his body, the club announced Thursday.

The 40-year-old forward has not taken part in training camp, missed the team’s first two preseason games and has yet to complete a full practice. Head coach JJ Redick previously described the issue as nerve irritation in James’s glute and noted the star was “on his own timeline.”

Sciatica originates in the spine and can cause pain that travels down the back of the leg. If James remains sidelined for the full projected period, he would be unavailable for Los Angeles’ season opener against the Golden State Warriors on Oct. 21.

Earlier this week, ESPN’s Shams Charania reported that James was expected to miss the entire preseason while aiming to return for opening night.
