CLEVELAND — LeBron James grew visibly emotional Wednesday night when the Cleveland Cavaliers honored a signature moment from his career during the Los Angeles Lakers’ visit to Rocket Mortgage FieldHouse.
The 41-year-old forward wiped away tears at a timeout with 7:46 left in the first quarter after the arena video board rolled highlights of him scoring 25 consecutive points in Game 5 of the 2007 Eastern Conference finals against the Detroit Pistons. James posted 48 points, nine rebounds and seven assists in that double-overtime win, 109-107, pushing Cleveland ahead in the series. The Cavaliers clinched their first NBA Finals berth by winning Game 6 at home.
Team officials had never before showcased footage from that performance. Previous tributes typically featured his Game 7 heroics in the 2016 NBA Finals—when Cleveland captured its lone championship—or clips from his selection as the No. 1 overall pick in the 2003 draft.
James, an Akron native, spent 11 seasons across two stints with the Cavaliers before departing in free agency to join the Lakers in 2018.
