The Los Angeles Lakers added frontcourt depth on Monday, inking 6-foot-10 forward Drew Timme to a two-way contract hours after ruling starting center Deandre Ayton out of Tuesday’s matchup with the LA Clippers because of a right knee contusion.

Timme, 25, joins the NBA roster after averaging 25.5 points, 7.5 rebounds and 4.0 assists this season with the South Bay Lakers, Los Angeles’ G League affiliate. According to league sources, he impressed coaches during recent practices, including sessions attended by LeBron James while the veteran star completed a rehabilitation assignment.

Agents Deddrick Faison and Rich Gray confirmed the agreement. To open the two-way slot, Los Angeles waived center Christian Koloko, sources said.

Timme finished last season with the Brooklyn Nets, posting 12.1 points, 7.2 rebounds and 2.2 assists in nine appearances after a stint with the G League’s Stockton Kings. The two-time West Coast Conference Player of the Year left Gonzaga in 2023 as the program’s all-time leading scorer with 2,307 points, but went undrafted and began his pro career that fall with the Wisconsin Herd on an Exhibit 10 contract from the Milwaukee Bucks.

Ayton suffered the knee bruise during Sunday’s 108-106 victory over the Utah Jazz and did not return. The team has not provided a timetable for his recovery.
