Sacramento Kings center Domantas Sabonis is expected to miss an additional four to five weeks as he rehabilitates a partial meniscus tear in his left knee, the team said Friday.
The three-time All-Star has been out since Nov. 16, a span of 13 games in which Sacramento has gone 3-10. He was originally listed with left knee soreness on Nov. 19, but subsequent imaging revealed the tear.
Sabonis, 29, has battled multiple injuries this season. He sat out the regular-season opener with a preseason hamstring strain and missed two early-November games because of a rib issue. Before this year he had been one of the league’s most durable big men, appearing in 79, 82 and 70 games over the previous three seasons.
In 11 games this season, Sabonis averaged 17.2 points and 12.3 rebounds after leading the NBA in rebounding each of the past three years.
His absence has opened minutes for second-round rookie Maxime Raynaud, who is contributing 9.6 points and 5.1 rebounds since Nov. 16. Over his last eight contests, Raynaud’s averages have climbed to 16.3 points and 7.5 boards.
The Kings are 6-21 and sit near the bottom of the Western Conference standings.
