Illness sidelines Warriors’ Stephen Curry for Friday’s NBA Cup opener in Denver

Golden State guard Stephen Curry has been ruled out of Friday night’s game against the Denver Nuggets because of an illness that developed after the Warriors’ recent trip to Milwaukee and Indianapolis.

The contest at Ball Arena marks Golden State’s first game of the inaugural NBA Cup. Curry began feeling sick before Tuesday’s home matchup with the Phoenix Suns, yet still logged 28 points in 34 minutes. Following that victory, he told reporters he felt drained during the second half, coughing and sniffing throughout a brief media session.

Curry was immediately scratched from Wednesday’s loss to the Sacramento Kings and will now miss a second consecutive game against a Western Conference opponent. Head coach Steve Kerr said he exchanged text messages with the 17-year veteran on Thursday and was told the symptoms were getting worse.

The two-time MVP is not expected to travel to Denver. Instead, he will remain in the Bay Area with plans to rejoin the team for Sunday night’s home meeting with the Indiana Pacers.

Meanwhile, forward Draymond Green (rib contusion) is listed as probable for Friday, and guard/forward Jimmy Butler (lower back strain) is questionable. Both players sat out the defeat in Sacramento but are “hopeful” to face the Nuggets, according to Kerr.
