The Charlotte Hornets have released veteran guard Spencer Dinwiddie, the team announced Thursday, only three months after he agreed to a one-year, $3.6 million contract.
Charlotte needed to clear a guaranteed salary to meet the NBA maximum of 15 standard contracts before next week’s regular-season opener and chose Dinwiddie’s deal for the roster move.
The 11-year veteran appeared in just two preseason games with the Hornets.
Dinwiddie averaged 14.3 points and 6.2 assists in 30 starts for the Dallas Mavericks last season. Over 79 total games in 2024-25, he posted 11.0 points, 4.4 assists and 2.6 rebounds in 27 minutes per contest.
After joining Dallas at the 2022 trade deadline in the Kristaps Porziņģis deal, Dinwiddie played a key sixth-man role on the club’s run to the Western Conference finals. He was traded to the Brooklyn Nets the following year as part of the Kyrie Irving transaction.
The Colorado product has also spent time with the Detroit Pistons, Washington Wizards and Los Angeles Lakers. He owns career averages of 13.0 points and 5.1 assists across 621 games, including 345 starts.
