Brooklyn, N.Y. — Atlanta Hawks star guard Trae Young was ruled out of Wednesday’s game against the Brooklyn Nets after suffering a right knee sprain when teammate Mouhamed Gueye unintentionally rolled into his leg late in the first quarter.

Young was positioned under the basket when Nets forward Noah Clowney shoved Gueye in the chest. The 6-foot-11 rookie fell backward, striking Young’s leg and knocking the four-time All-Star to the floor in visible pain. After several moments, Young stood and jogged to the bench during a timeout, returned for one defensive possession, then signaled to be removed and headed directly to the locker room.

The Hawks announced shortly afterward that the 27-year-old would not return. Young entered the night averaging 20.8 points and 9.5 assists. Last season, he led the league with a career-best 11.6 assists per game.

Atlanta began the season with heightened expectations following an offseason trade for Kristaps Porzingis and the free-agent signings of Nickeil Alexander-Walker and Luke Kennard. The club fell to 1-3 on the year after Monday’s loss in Chicago.
