The Atlanta Hawks have ruled out Kristaps Porzingis for Saturday night’s matchup against the Los Angeles Lakers, citing illness management, the team announced Friday.
The 7-foot-3 forward/center will miss the second half of a back-to-back after sitting out two consecutive games earlier this season with flu-like symptoms.
Porzingis battled a significant illness during last year’s postseason with the Boston Celtics, averaging 7.7 points and 4.6 rebounds in 21 minutes over 11 playoff appearances.
Acquired by Atlanta in a summer trade, the 30-year-old is averaging 17.6 points, 6.3 rebounds and 1.3 blocks through the first month of the season. He said during training camp that he had fully recovered from the illness that hampered him in the playoffs.
The Hawks are already without All-Star guard Trae Young, who is expected to miss at least a month with a right knee MCL sprain. Reserve guard Luke Kennard will sit out a second straight game with illness, and rookie forward Nikola Durisic remains sidelined by a right elbow sprain.
Forward Jalen Johnson (right quad contusion) and guard Nickeil Alexander-Walker (low back strain) are listed as questionable for Saturday after playing in Friday night’s loss to the Toronto Raptors.
