MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Memphis Grizzlies forward GG Jackson said Friday night that NBA officials give established stars, specifically Houston Rockets forward Kevin Durant, more favorable calls than younger players.
Following a 119-109 home loss to Houston, Jackson told reporters he believes whistles consistently lean toward Durant. “KD can jab step and just jump up and down and your hand is right there,” the third-year pro said. “You clearly see on the replay that nobody touched him.”
Durant, now in his 19th season, scored 25 points, handed out 10 assists and grabbed six rebounds. He went 7-for-7 at the free throw line as Houston attempted 26 free throws overall, compared with Memphis’ 18.
Jackson suggested officiating favoritism is tied to status. “It’s unbelievable how the refs can suck up to somebody,” he said. “He’s the GOAT, so I respect that, but the rest of us bust our tails like he does.”
The normally upbeat 6-foot-9 forward voiced his frustration as the Grizzlies dropped their fifth straight game and fell to 1-13 over their past 14 contests. Injuries to several starters have expanded Jackson’s role; he is averaging 12.0 points this season and finished with 14 against Houston.
Jackson also recounted an in-game exchange with Rockets reserve Tari Eason. After Jackson complained about the calls, Eason reportedly told him, “You’re not KD.” Jackson replied, “On this court, I’m the closest one to him.”
