LOS ANGELES — Former NBA standout Paul Pierce was taken into custody Tuesday night on a misdemeanor charge of driving under the influence after California Highway Patrol officers found him asleep behind the wheel on U.S. Highway 101, authorities said.
CHP officials reported that officers were already on the northbound lanes of the 101 around 10:40 p.m. investigating a separate multi-vehicle collision that had forced the closure of four of the six lanes. About an hour later, once traffic lanes reopened, they noticed a Range Rover stopped in the roadway south of the crash scene.
According to a CHP news release, the driver—identified as Pierce—was asleep in the SUV. Officers “observed signs of alcohol impairment” and conducted a field sobriety evaluation before arresting the 47-year-old former player on suspicion of DUI. The case will be forwarded to the Los Angeles city attorney for review.
Pierce, who did not immediately respond to a request for comment, spent 15 seasons with the Boston Celtics and later played for the Brooklyn Nets, Washington Wizards and Los Angeles Clippers before retiring in 2017. The 10-time All-Star was the 2008 NBA Finals MVP and joined the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 2021.
Most recently, Pierce cohosted the Fox Sports talk show “Speak,” which was canceled in July 2025.
