SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico — Three-time NBA champion Rick Fox said Monday he will compete for a seat in the Bahamas’ House of Assembly during the country’s 2026 general election.
The former Los Angeles Lakers forward revealed his candidacy in a Facebook post on Nov. 25, pledging to pursue “more transparency, a modern economy that prioritizes affordability and security, and a country where opportunity is our reality, not just a promise.”
Fox’s announcement comes as the island nation confronts a series of corruption investigations, a rise in unauthorized migration and an ongoing rebuilding effort from Hurricane Dorian, the Category 5 storm that struck in September 2019.
Born in Toronto to a Canadian mother and Bahamian father, Fox grew up in the Bahamas before launching a 13-year NBA career. Selected 24th overall by the Boston Celtics in the 1991 draft, he spent six seasons in Boston and seven with the Lakers, winning championships in 2000, 2001 and 2002.
Outside basketball, Fox ventured into esports in 2015, co-founding Echo Fox and purchasing a franchise slot in the North American League of Legends Championship Series. He later exited the organization.
The 56-year-old did not specify which constituency he plans to represent. The Bahamas has not yet set an exact date for next year’s vote.
