Former NBA player Jason Collins, the league’s first openly gay athlete, is undergoing treatment for a brain tumor, his family announced Thursday.
In a statement released through the NBA, Collins’ relatives asked for privacy while they focus on his health. “Jason and his family welcome your support and prayers and kindly ask for privacy as they dedicate their attention to Jason’s health and well-being,” the family said.
Collins, 46, ended a 13-year NBA career in 2014 after stints with the New Jersey Nets, Memphis Grizzlies, Minnesota Timberwolves, Atlanta Hawks, Boston Celtics, Washington Wizards and the Brooklyn Nets. He publicly came out as gay in 2013, becoming the first openly gay athlete to compete in any of North America’s four major professional sports leagues.
The Nets expressed support on social media, writing, “Sending our love and support to @jasoncollins98 and his family.”
The 7-footer averaged 3.6 points and 3.7 rebounds per game over his career. His top season came in 2004-05 with New Jersey, when he posted 6.4 points and 6.1 rebounds per contest.
Collins currently serves as an NBA ambassador, promoting inclusion and diversity throughout the sport.
