PHILADELPHIA — The Philadelphia 76ers ruled out center Joel Embiid for Thursday night’s home game against the Atlanta Hawks because of soreness in his right shin, the team announced.

According to the club, Embiid began feeling discomfort while following a right knee injury-management program during the All-Star break. Team medical staff has administered daily treatment, and the 7-footer is working through on-court drills along with strength and conditioning sessions.

The Sixers said Embiid will undergo another evaluation before their back-to-back road games — Saturday in New Orleans and Sunday in Minnesota.

Embiid, 31, is averaging 26.6 points over 31 appearances this season and has been free of the minute limits that restricted him in recent years. He missed three of Philadelphia’s final five games before the break because of right knee soreness.

Philadelphia has dropped six of the last seven contests Embiid has sat out. Last season he was limited to 19 games and played 39 the year before that. Despite the injuries, the organization awarded him a three-year, $193 million extension in 2024 that includes a player option for the 2028-29 season and begins next year.

Over his career, the former Kansas standout has dealt with a series of setbacks, including a pre-draft stress fracture in his right foot, a meniscus tear, multiple knee and shoulder issues, tendinitis, torn ligaments, a fractured orbital bone and Bell’s palsy.
