Elden Campbell, Clemson University’s career scoring leader and a member of the Detroit Pistons’ 2003-04 championship roster, died Tuesday at age 57, the school confirmed. No cause of death was released.
Campbell played at Clemson from 1986 to 1990, earning All-ACC honors three times and guiding the Tigers to three NCAA tournament appearances. As a senior, he helped the program capture its only regular-season ACC crown before a Sweet 16 exit against Connecticut on a last-second shot.
The 6-foot-11 forward finished his collegiate career with 1,880 points, still the most in Clemson history. He also ranks second on the school’s all-time list in blocked shots (334) and eighth in rebounds (836).
“I am deeply saddened to learn of Elden Campbell’s passing,” former Clemson coach Cliff Ellis said in a statement. “Elden was an outstanding, giving person who loved Clemson and continued to support the program after retiring.”
The Los Angeles Lakers selected Campbell in the first round of the 1990 NBA draft. He spent nine seasons with the Lakers before a 1999 trade to the Charlotte Hornets. Later stops included Seattle, New Jersey and Detroit, where he earned an NBA title in 2004. Campbell appeared in 1,044 regular-season games over 15 years, averaging 10.3 points and 5.9 rebounds.
