DETROIT — Minnesota Timberwolves guard Anthony Edwards can no longer qualify for any NBA postseason honors after the club scratched him from Thursday night’s game against the Detroit Pistons because of right knee pain and an illness.
Edwards has logged 59 appearances this season, but league accounting credits him with only 58. With just six games remaining on Minnesota’s schedule, the 24-year-old cannot reach the 65-game threshold required for MVP, All-NBA and other individual awards under the league’s new collective bargaining agreement.
The four-time All-Star last played Tuesday, dropping 17 points in 23 minutes during a win over Dallas. That outing was his first action in two weeks after missing six contests with the same knee issue. He sat out at Little Caesars Arena one night later.
Edwards placed seventh in MVP voting in each of the past two seasons and has earned All-NBA honors twice. He is averaging a career-best 29.3 points per game but will fall well short of the 70-plus games he logged in each of his first five years in the league.
