MEMPHIS, Tenn. — First-year guard VJ Edgecombe buried a 25-foot jumper with 1.7 seconds remaining in overtime, giving the Philadelphia 76ers a 139-136 win over the Memphis Grizzlies on Tuesday night.
The No. 3 pick in the 2025 draft finished with 25 points, including 13 in the fourth quarter. Edgecombe hit three of his four fourth-quarter attempts from beyond the arc, helping Philadelphia erase a late deficit and forcing the extra session.
“I was actually trying to release it when the buzzer sounded, but it was a little early,” Edgecombe said about his decisive shot. “It went in, and that’s all that matters.”
Joel Embiid and Tyrese Maxey paced the 76ers with 34 points apiece, while Paul George added 17. Maxey and Embiid scored on consecutive possessions in overtime to pull Philadelphia even after Memphis opened the period in front.
Ja Morant matched Embiid and Maxey down the stretch, driving for a layup with 18.3 seconds left to knot the score at 136 before Edgecombe’s winner.
Edgecombe, averaging 15.5 points this season, drew praise from head coach Nick Nurse. “A game-winner for a rookie is pretty cool,” Nurse said. “He never shows much emotion. He just plays.”
