New York Knicks owner James Dolan made clear he has no interest in hanging any “consolation” banners at Madison Square Garden, insisting the franchise’s focus remains on capturing an NBA championship.
In remarks published on January 5, 2026, Dolan dismissed the idea of commemorating lesser achievements, saying only a title would satisfy the organization’s standards.
“We want the real thing,” he said, according to the report. “Anything short of that doesn’t belong in the rafters.”
The Knicks last raised a banner for a league championship in 1973, and Dolan’s comments underline the ownership’s expectation of ending that half-century drought rather than celebrating incremental progress.
