MILWAUKEE — San Antonio Spurs guard De’Aaron Fox has been added to the NBA All-Star Game roster after Giannis Antetokounmpo was ruled out because of a right calf strain.
The Milwaukee Bucks confirmed Thursday that Antetokounmpo will not play in Sunday’s exhibition at Inglewood, California. The two-time MVP has been sidelined since injuring the calf during a Jan. 23 defeat to the Denver Nuggets.
Fox joins the USA Stripes squad as the injury replacement. Miami Heat swingman Norman Powell, who has Jamaican heritage, moves from the USA Stripes to the Team World lineup to occupy Antetokounmpo’s roster slot.
Although he cannot suit up, Antetokounmpo still plans to travel west for All-Star weekend. The 31-year-old forward will serve as a coach in Friday’s All-Star Celebrity Game alongside his brothers Thanasis and Alex, as well as Los Angeles Dodgers outfielder Mookie Betts. He is also expected to support the Team World players on Sunday.
Antetokounmpo had been selected as an All-Star starter for the 10th consecutive season. Through 30 games, he is averaging 28.0 points, 10.0 rebounds and 5.6 assists.
