University of South Carolina women’s basketball coach Dawn Staley said she was prepared to leave Columbia and take over the New York Knicks but ultimately halted the move herself, the New York Post reported on Aug. 27, 2025.
Staley, who has led the Gamecocks to national prominence, told the newspaper that an opportunity to coach the NBA franchise had been within reach. According to her account, however, she “thwarted her own shot,” ending the possibility before any agreement was finalized.
The coach did not publicly disclose further details about the discussions or explain what prompted her decision to remain at South Carolina.
