David Fizdale Says Front-Office Tanking Order Ruined His Knicks Record

Former New York Knicks head coach David Fizdale blames his disappointing stint with the franchise on a directive to lose games deliberately, saying he was “donating my record” to the club’s rebuilding plan.

Speaking with the New York Post in remarks published 3 March 2026, Fizdale said members of the Knicks’ leadership told him that accumulating losses—and therefore improving lottery odds—was essential. He maintains that mandate made it impossible to compile a respectable win-loss mark before he was dismissed.

Fizdale did not identify specific executives or provide details about when the alleged order was given, but stressed that the strategy overshadowed normal coaching objectives. “We weren’t coaching to win,” he said, adding that the approach ultimately stained his résumé.

The coach led the Knicks for parts of two seasons before being fired. He now contends his record should be viewed in the context of what he describes as an organizational decision to prioritize draft position over victories.

Knicks representatives declined to comment on Fizdale’s statements when contacted by the Post.
