The NBA has imposed a $250,000 penalty on the Cleveland Cavaliers for resting All-Star guard Darius Garland during a nationally televised game against the Toronto Raptors on Nov. 24.
The league announced Thursday that an investigation determined Garland was fit to appear in at least one contest of Cleveland’s back-to-back set. The 23-year-old played at home against the LA Clippers on Nov. 23 but did not suit up the following night in Toronto, where the matchup aired on Peacock in the United States and Sportsnet in Canada. Under the NBA’s player participation policy, Garland is classified as a star player and therefore subject to stricter rest guidelines.
This marks the Cavaliers’ second violation of the policy this season. On Nov. 18, the team was fined $100,000 for holding out Donovan Mitchell and Evan Mobley against the Miami Heat on Nov. 12.
Toronto extended its winning streak to eight games with a 110-99 victory over Cleveland on Nov. 24. The Cavaliers were also without De’Andre Hunter (rest) and Jarrett Allen (sprained finger) in that contest.
