The NBA has issued a $100,000 fine to the Cleveland Cavaliers for violating the league’s player participation policy by holding out Donovan Mitchell and Evan Mobley during a Nov. 12 road game against the Miami Heat.

The league’s policy, implemented ahead of the 2023-24 season to discourage load management, designates both Mitchell and Mobley as “star players.” Cleveland listed each as out for “rest” while navigating a stretch of six games in eight days.

Mitchell and Mobley had played two days earlier in an overtime loss to Miami on Nov. 10 and returned to the lineup the following night, Nov. 13, when the Cavaliers hosted the Heat in Cleveland.
