Brogdon’s Arrival Pushes Knicks Backcourt Into Competition

Veteran guard Malcolm Brogdon officially joined the New York Knicks on Friday, Sept. 12, immediately tightening an already crowded backcourt.

Brogdon’s presence puts pressure on third-year guard Miles McBride, who had carved out minutes last season. The Knicks must now determine how to distribute playing time among Brogdon, McBride and the rest of their perimeter rotation.

The roster squeeze has also sparked outside speculation that the club could look at trade options to balance the lineup, though no specific moves have been announced.

Brogdon, 32, averaged double-digit scoring in each of his first nine NBA seasons and brings additional playmaking and defensive versatility. McBride, 24, earned praise for his on-ball defense and improved shooting but could see his role change if the rotation tightens.

The Knicks open training camp later this month, giving head coach Tom Thibodeau a short window to evaluate lineups before preseason play begins.
