Dallas Mavericks reserve guard Brandon Williams publicly apologized Wednesday night for what he called a “distraction” following his weekend arrest on a marijuana possession charge.
“I can’t really go into further detail,” the 25-year-old guard told reporters before Dallas faced the Indiana Pacers. “I just want to apologize for being a distraction. I want to take full accountability.”
Airport police arrested Williams on Saturday at Dallas–Fort Worth International Airport after officers found less than two ounces of marijuana in his luggage. The incident occurred while Williams was traveling to attend a friend’s funeral, according to Mavericks head coach Jason Kidd.
“Going to a funeral for a friend that’s passing, having that incident, that’s something he has to deal with,” Kidd said. “We can all be here to support him.”
Williams, now in his fourth NBA season, has averaged 9.5 minutes and has yet to score in two appearances this year. He missed the Mavericks’ previous two games for personal reasons but was active against Indiana on Wednesday.
