Bickerstaff Accuses Referee John Goble of Bias After Pistons’ OT Loss in Dallas

Dallas — Detroit Pistons head coach J.B. Bickerstaff charged that crew chief John Goble “came into the game not being objective” following the team’s 116-114 overtime defeat to the Dallas Mavericks on Thursday night.
Speaking briefly after the game, Bickerstaff avoided naming Goble directly but cited several calls the official made, including the second-quarter technical foul and ejection of forward Ausar Thompson and a technical assessed to Bickerstaff moments after the halftime buzzer.
“Night by night, this is how our interactions are,” Bickerstaff said Goble told him during the contest. “That says to me that the referee is coming into the game not being objective.”
Disputed Technicals and Ejection
Goble told a pool reporter Thompson was removed for “aggressively approaching and making contact with an official.” He said Bickerstaff’s technical stemmed from “continuous complaining.” Guard Cade Cunningham, who had been arguing with Goble before Bickerstaff stepped in, received a technical with 24 seconds left in the second quarter.
Detroit erased an 18-point deficit after halftime to force the extra period. On the Pistons’ final possession, center Jalen Duren grabbed two offensive rebounds, and Bickerstaff signaled for a timeout from the backcourt following the second board. “That same referee is standing next to me,” the coach said. “Does not award me the timeout.”
Tempers Flare on Both Sides
The Mavericks also expressed frustration with the officiating. With 3.4 seconds remaining in regulation, Dallas coach Jason Kidd climbed onto the scorer’s table after center Anthony Davis was whistled for a foul on Isaiah Stewart. Stewart made one of two free throws to tie the score.
Rookie forward Cooper Flagg, who posted 23 points, 10 rebounds, four assists and three blocks, angrily sought a foul call when he hit the floor on a late overtime drive. Teammate Brandon Williams pulled him away to prevent a technical.
Free-Throw Gap and Standings Impact
Detroit attempted 20 free throws to Dallas’ 36. Bickerstaff insisted the contest “was not about the referees” but said the perceived lack of objectivity “needs to be addressed.”
The victory was Dallas’ sixth in eight games, improving the Mavericks to 11-17 and into the Western Conference’s final play-in position. Over that span, Flagg is averaging 25.4 points on 52.4% shooting, 6.4 rebounds and 3.6 assists.
