The NBA’s Last Two Minute Report released Sunday ruled that a pivotal late-game whistle should not have been called during the Los Angeles Lakers’ 127-125 overtime win against the Denver Nuggets on Saturday.
With 9.2 seconds left in regulation and Denver leading 116-113, Lakers guard Austin Reaves was awarded two free throws after official Joe Barr called a foul on Spencer Jones immediately following an inbounds pass. The report states that Jones “cleanly dislodges the ball away from Reaves,” meaning the correct decision would have been a clean strip with the ball going out of bounds rather than a foul.
Reaves converted both free throws to trim the deficit to one. After a pair of free throws from Cameron Johnson pushed Denver’s advantage back to 118-115, Reaves returned to the line, hit the first shot, intentionally missed the second, secured the rebound and tied the game with a floater.
The contest moved to overtime, where the Lakers prevailed on a game-winning jumper by Luka Doncic.
