SAN ANTONIO — Detroit Pistons forward Ausar Thompson exited Thursday night’s 121-106 defeat to the San Antonio Spurs after spraining his right ankle late in the first quarter.
The injury occurred with 9:54 left in the opening period when Thompson drove to the rim. As Spurs rookie Stephon Castle contested the attempt and Victor Wembanyama trailed the play, Thompson planted hard on his right foot, immediately began limping and fell near the baseline. Team medical personnel helped the third-year wing to the locker room, and he did not return.
“Ausar obviously means a lot to us,” head coach J.B. Bickerstaff said. “What he does defensively, the impact he has, you miss that. We just had to figure out a way collectively to pick it up.”
Thompson is averaging 10.4 points, 6.0 rebounds, 3.0 assists and 1.9 steals this season for a Detroit squad that, according to ESPN Analytics, entered the game with a 99.2% probability of securing the No. 1 seed in the Eastern Conference. The Pistons did not provide an immediate update on the severity of the sprain.
