Dallas Mavericks forward Anthony Davis is scheduled to have surgery on his left hand to repair ligament damage and is projected to be sidelined for several months, according to sources familiar with the situation.
The procedure effectively ends Davis’ season with the Mavericks, who sit at 15-25 and 12th in the Western Conference. Team officials are turning their attention to the future as this June marks the last NBA draft in which Dallas retains control of its own first-round pick until 2031.
Since the extent of the injury was confirmed on Friday, the Mavericks have reopened trade discussions with multiple clubs, sources said. Contenders previously linked to Davis, including the Toronto Raptors and Atlanta Hawks, remain interested. A move to a playoff team could put the 10-time All-Star on track for a possible postseason return while providing his next franchise with a longer competitive window at a reduced acquisition cost.
Davis hurt his hand while defending Lauri Markkanen late in Thursday’s road loss to the Utah Jazz. He finished that game with 21 points, 11 rebounds, four assists and one block in 35 minutes.
Injuries have restricted Davis to 29 regular-season appearances since arriving from the Los Angeles Lakers in early February as the key piece in the trade that sent Luka Doncic to L.A. The Mavericks are 10-10 with Davis in the lineup and 5-15 without him this season.
Through 20 games this year, the 32-year-old is averaging 20.4 points, 11.1 rebounds, 2.8 assists and 1.7 blocks.
