The Internal Revenue Service has released an $8,218,211 federal tax lien filed last year against Charlotte Hornets guard Terry Rozier, according to Broward County, Florida, records reviewed by ESPN.

The IRS issued the release on Oct. 29, a day after ESPN first reported on the lien and five days after Rozier was arrested on federal charges of conspiracy to commit wire fraud and money laundering tied to an alleged gambling scheme. The document was recorded with the Broward County Courthouse on Nov. 20.

Rozier’s attorney, Jim Trusty, said in October that the lien stemmed from an electronic filing error and that the player actually owed only $3,000 in unpaid 2021 taxes, a figure he said has since been paid. Trusty did not supply proof of payment and did not respond to a request for comment on Monday.

An IRS spokesperson, citing federal privacy laws, declined to discuss the case. By rule, the agency must file a lien release within 30 days of a taxpayer satisfying the outstanding balance.

The original lien was filed in November 2023 in Broward County, where Rozier purchased property in June 2021. Tax professionals told ESPN that taxpayers typically receive immediate notice of successful electronic filings; a failed filing and an unpaid balance would have prompted multiple alerts to Rozier or his representatives.

Rozier, accused of providing nonpublic information about his March 2023 plans to leave a game to a friend who allegedly forwarded it to bettors, is scheduled for arraignment on Dec. 8 in federal court in Brooklyn. Trusty has said his client is not guilty.
