PHILADELPHIA — The 76ers will be without All-Star guard Tyrese Maxey for a minimum of three weeks after tests revealed a tendon injury in his right pinkie, the club announced Tuesday.
Maxey was hurt with 16 seconds remaining in Saturday’s road loss to the Atlanta Hawks when he collided with teammate Adem Bona. He immediately clutched his right hand and headed to the locker room. Initial X-rays and an MRI showed no fractures, but additional imaging and consultations with multiple hand specialists confirmed the tendon damage, according to the team.
The fourth-year guard had sprained the same finger last season. Through 61 games this year, Maxey is posting career highs of 29 points, 6.7 assists, 4.1 rebounds, 2 steals and 0.8 blocks. He leads the league in minutes and miles logged per game and is the only NBA player with at least 100 steals and 50 blocks this season.
Philadelphia entered Tuesday night’s matchup with the Memphis Grizzlies at 33-28, eighth in the Eastern Conference, and has dropped four of its past five outings. The 76ers are 33-28 when Maxey plays and 1-2 without him.
The league’s regular season ends April 12. Should Maxey miss the rest of the schedule, he would finish four games shy of the 65-game requirement for All-NBA consideration.
Center Joel Embiid (right oblique strain) missed his fifth straight game Tuesday and will be reevaluated later this week. Forward Paul George remains sidelined, roughly two weeks away from completing a 25-game suspension for violating the NBA’s anti-drug program. Over the past two seasons, Embiid, George and Maxey have appeared together in only 31 games.
