Philadelphia 76ers center Joel Embiid was released from a Houston hospital on Friday, less than 24 hours after undergoing emergency surgery for appendicitis, the team said.

The 32-year-old will return to Philadelphia, where his rehabilitation will be overseen by team physicians alongside the operating surgeon. The 76ers did not provide a timetable for Embiid’s return to game action.

Embiid’s sudden absence was felt Thursday night when Philadelphia fell 113-102 to the Houston Rockets. The loss dropped the club to eighth place in the Eastern Conference with two regular-season games remaining — Friday at the Indiana Pacers and Sunday at home against the Milwaukee Bucks.

Depending on those results and other league outcomes, the 76ers could still finish as high as the No. 6 seed or slip to No. 10, which would place them in the play-in tournament that opens Tuesday.

Head coach Nick Nurse told reporters Thursday that Embiid practiced without issues on Wednesday before his condition worsened overnight. “It is a tough blow,” Nurse said. “The biggest thing right now is that Joel comes out of the surgery as best as possible and all that goes well. That’s where most of my thoughts are right now.”

Embiid is averaging 26.9 points and 7.7 rebounds across 38 games this season.
