The Miami Heat and forward Jimmy Butler have reached an agreement that returns roughly half of the nearly $6 million in salary he surrendered during a series of team-imposed suspensions last season, the South Florida Sun Sentinel reported on Wednesday.

A person familiar with the settlement told the newspaper that both sides are satisfied with the outcome, which followed a grievance filed by the National Basketball Players Association on Butler’s behalf. During the appeals process, arbitrators ruled that the Heat were within their rights to discipline the All-Star, while also deeming Butler’s challenge to the severity of the penalties reasonable, according to the report.

Butler, who was seeking a trade before the February deadline, missed nine games for “conduct detrimental to the team” and another five games for “failure to render services.” Under the NBA’s Collective Bargaining Agreement, the nine-game ban cost him $336,543 per contest—calculated as 1/145th of his $48,798,677 salary—while the five-game indefinite suspension carried a higher rate of $532,737 per game, or 1/91.6th of his salary.

The five-game suspension ended when Miami shipped Butler to the Golden State Warriors. Similar settlements have occurred in the past; Ben Simmons, for instance, later recouped a portion of the nearly $20 million he forfeited to the 76ers during the 2021-22 season.

Butler’s first full season with Golden State opened Tuesday on a high note, as he scored 31 points and hit all 16 of his free-throw attempts in a victory over the Los Angeles Lakers.
