Philadelphia’s front office expected a lot from VJ Edgecombe when it selected him third overall in June, and the rookie exceeded those hopes during the preseason. In last Friday’s finale, head coach Nick Nurse handed the Baylor product full control of the offense; Edgecombe responded with 26 points, six rebounds, three assists and five steals across 34 minutes.
Nurse said the club initially considered giving Edgecombe ball-handling reps only in Summer League. “Where we’re at, I think he’s way ahead of where we thought he might be,” the coach noted.
Edgecombe’s emergence puts him alongside Tyrese Maxey, Quentin Grimes and fellow rookie Jared McCain in a deep young backcourt, yet team insiders expect the 19-year-old to start Wednesday night when the 76ers open the regular season in Boston. “I know I worked hard to be in this position,” Edgecombe said. “I’m just out there having fun.”
Injury Updates
• Paul George took part in a full practice Sunday for the first time since offseason knee surgery. The veteran forward missed the entire preseason but drew positive reviews from Nurse, who said George moved well defensively and is pushing to regain conditioning.
• Joel Embiid practiced without restrictions after making his preseason debut Friday.
• Trendon Watford (right hamstring) was limited to drills and five-on-zero work.
