Charlotte, NC — Hornets head coach Charles Lee believes rookie forward Liam McNeeley could become one of the 2025 draft’s biggest bargains, even though the 29th overall pick posted modest preseason numbers. McNeeley averaged 6.4 points and 2.4 rebounds while shooting just 14.3% from three over five games, but closed exhibition play with a double-digit outing in his lone start Friday.

“Offensively he’s got the total package,” Lee said, citing catch-and-shoot ability, drives, facilitation and offensive rebounding. The coach added that the 19-year-old must still “build consistent habits” and add defensive physicality.

Wizards guard Carrington returns to practice

In Washington, second-year guard Bub Carrington took part in Sunday’s full practice after knee soreness limited him to four minutes against Detroit on Thursday. With veteran CJ McCollum and top-10 pick Tre Johnson now in the backcourt mix, Carrington enters a pivotal season for the Wizards.

Newell makes most of rare Hawks start

Asa Newell, Atlanta’s first-round selection, started Monday’s preseason game versus Miami while the Hawks rested regulars. The forward logged more than 36 minutes, finishing with 19 points, eight rebounds, two steals and two blocks. Head coach Quin Snyder praised Newell’s quick decision-making, saying, “I love the fact that he’s quickly reading and taking a shot when he’s open.”

Heat convert Young to two-way deal

The Heat elevated guard Jahmir Young from an Exhibit 10 contract to a two-way slot after Saturday’s roster cuts. “It’s harder to stay than to be here,” Young said. Head coach Erik Spoelstra highlighted Young’s speed, paint penetration and three-point shooting, noting that he was “a tough guy to corral” during practices.

Achiuwa waived amid tax concerns

Miami also waived forward Precious Achiuwa, who averaged 4.8 points and 5.3 rebounds in 11.7 minutes across four preseason appearances. Spoelstra called the move “tough,” pointing to the team’s prior relationship with the 2020 first-round pick, but said retaining him would have pushed the Heat over the luxury-tax line.
