The Boston Celtics have signed head coach Joe Mazzulla to a multi-year extension, the team announced Friday.

Mazzulla, 36, has been at the helm since Feb. 16, 2023, when he moved from interim status to replace Ime Udoka. During his first full season he guided Boston to the 2024 NBA championship, then saw the club’s title defense end in the 2025 Eastern Conference semifinals against the New York Knicks.

In a statement released by the team, Mazzulla called the new deal “a blessing,” thanked his family, ownership, president of basketball operations Brad Stevens and the coaching staff, and added that he is eager to keep competing for Boston.

Stevens, who promoted Mazzulla to the top job, said he is “very excited” about the extension, noting that the coach’s passion matches that of the franchise’s most devoted fans. Stevens highlighted Mazzulla’s résumé of averaging more than 60 wins per season and capturing the 2024 title, describing him as “a gifted leader” committed to continuous improvement.

Under Mazzulla, Boston’s offense has leaned heavily on an analytics-driven shot profile that prioritizes attempts at the rim and three-pointers while limiting mid-range looks mostly to stars Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown. The Celtics have led the league in three-point attempts in each of the past two seasons, launching 48.2 per game in 2024-25—nearly six more than the second-place Golden State Warriors and roughly 11 above the league average of 37.

The roster entering the 2025-26 campaign is considered less equipped for an immediate title run, but the coaching staff is expected to maintain its emphasis on spacing and volume perimeter shooting. External expectations are modest, and a postseason berth is not seen as a certainty, leaving Boston’s approach in a potential transition year under close watch.
