The Denver Nuggets have added free-agent point guard James Akinjo to their preseason roster on an Exhibit 10 contract, according to Keith Smith of Spotrac.

Akinjo, 24, has spent the past three seasons in the NBA G League after going undrafted in 2022. The 6-foot-1 guard split time with the Westchester Knicks, Stockton Kings and Wisconsin Herd, averaging 14.6 points, 7.9 assists, 3.4 rebounds and 1.8 steals in 41 games for the Herd last season while shooting 40.3 percent from the field, 36.1 percent from three and 84.4 percent at the line.

Denver’s affiliate, the Grand Rapids Gold, acquired Akinjo’s returning rights from the Herd in an August trade, signaling that the Nuggets planned to secure his Exhibit 10 rights. Once Akinjo is waived, he can receive a bonus of up to $85,300 by spending at least 60 days with the Gold.

The Nuggets had two open slots on their 21-man preseason roster after releasing Terrence Hargrove Jr. and Coleman Hawkins last week, so no corresponding move was required to add Akinjo. Denver now has 20 players under contract.
