NBA Restricted Free Agents Still in Limbo as Negotiations Stall

Four of the NBA’s most prominent restricted free agents remain without new contracts, and league insiders do not anticipate quick resolutions.
During a Bleacher Report live stream on Thursday, reporter Jake Fischer said Golden State Warriors forward Jonathan Kuminga, Chicago Bulls guard Josh Giddey, Philadelphia 76ers guard Quentin Grimes and Brooklyn Nets guard Cam Thomas are all locked in prolonged standoffs with their respective teams.
“We are still in a holding pattern with all these restricted free agents,” Fischer explained, adding that the impasses could extend through August and possibly into September.
Kuminga Talks at a Standstill
According to Fischer, Golden State has rejected sign-and-trade proposals from the Sacramento Kings and Phoenix Suns for Kuminga. The Warriors want to keep the 21-year-old forward but have no intention of meeting his current salary demands.
Kuminga’s representatives are reportedly willing to accept either a two-plus-one deal that includes a player option in the third season or a two-year, $45 million contract with a player option after the first year. The Warriors, however, insist on a team option for Year 2, creating the current deadlock.

Other Restricted Free Agents Waiting
Fischer did not provide specific contract figures for Giddey, Grimes or Thomas but said negotiations with the Bulls, 76ers and Nets, respectively, are moving at a similarly slow pace. All four situations are expected to drag on well past the opening weeks of free agency.
