Warriors roster moves on hold as Kuminga negotiations linger

The Golden State Warriors are delaying several offseason transactions while they attempt to settle Jonathan Kuminga’s contract status, according to multiple reports.
Only nine Warriors hold standard contracts for next season, and front-office plans are stalled until Kuminga’s situation is resolved. Jake Fischer of Bleacher Report reported that veteran free agents Al Horford, De’Anthony Melton and Gary Payton II remain in a “holding pattern,” while Malcolm Brogdon, Seth Curry and forward Javonte Green have also been discussed as potential additions.
The Sacramento Kings and Phoenix Suns explored sign-and-trade concepts for Kuminga, but Golden State was not satisfied with the offers. Brett Siegel of ClutchPoints noted that negotiations never became serious, and no other teams have been linked to the third-year forward.
Salary-cap analyst Yossi Gozlan wrote in his “Third Apron” column that the Warriors are effectively frozen until Kuminga’s contract is settled. Finalizing deals with Horford and Melton would force Golden State to use the taxpayer mid-level exception and trigger a hard cap of $207.8 million, which could allow a cap-space opponent to offer Kuminga close to $30 million annually—an amount the Warriors could not match.
Gozlan views a sign-and-trade as the simplest solution. If Kuminga re-signs in Golden State, a contract in the $22–23 million range would let the club use the taxpayer MLE and add three minimum-salary players while staying under the hard cap.

For now, league sources expect Kuminga to open the 2024-25 season with the Warriors, but the ongoing impasse continues to block the remainder of the team’s offseason agenda.
