Several Eastern Conference teams offered updates on roster plans and player roles as training camp progresses.
Pistons Hand Ausar Thompson More Playmaking Duties
Detroit is experimenting with rookie wing Ausar Thompson as a primary ball-handler to ease the offensive load on Cade Cunningham, head coach J.B. Bickerstaff told reporters. Bickerstaff said Thompson’s pace “changes how teams guard him” and creates easier shots for teammates. Cunningham welcomed the shift, noting that Thompson can “initiate offense at a high level,” allowing Detroit’s franchise guard to work off the ball against set defenses.
Plumlee Plans to Contribute on the Court in Charlotte
Veteran center Mason Plumlee, 34, re-signed with the Hornets expecting significant minutes, not just a mentorship role. “My understanding is we’re playing to win this year, so that was my interest in coming here and I want to contribute to that,” Plumlee said. He joins a young frontcourt featuring 23-year-olds Moussa Diabaté and Ryan Kalkbrenner, providing experience to a developing roster.
Nets Emphasize Draft Strategy Amid Youth Movement
Brooklyn owner Joe Tsai recently told fans the club hopes to secure a strong 2026 draft pick, hinting at a long-term rebuild. Head coach Jordi Fernández framed Tsai’s remarks as confidence in the front office’s scouting. “Our front office is so good we’re going to pick a very good player,” Fernández said. The Nets traded away Cameron Johnson during the offseason and brought in five rookies after finishing last year with 26 wins.
