CLEVELAND — Newly acquired guard Lonzo Ball says he is still searching for his rhythm with the Cleveland Cavaliers but is grateful to join a playoff contender after July’s trade from the Chicago Bulls.
“All I can control is where I’m at and who I’m playing for, and that’s the Cavs right now,” the 27-year-old told reporters. Ball appeared in 35 games last season following a two-and-a-half-year absence caused by lingering knee problems. Cleveland intends to monitor his workload, trim his minutes and sit him in most back-to-back situations.
Ball’s return to Chicago this week featured a tribute video and a standing ovation. “Loved the city of Chicago, and as you can see, the fans still rock with me,” he said.
Celtics
BOSTON — Guard Anfernee Simons logged his first preseason minutes with the Celtics on Friday night, finishing with 18 points and three assists in 26 minutes. He also picked up three quick fouls in the opening five minutes.
Simons admitted nerves played a role. “I was a little nervous at first, but I think in the second half I calmed down and started to play my game,” he told The Boston Globe. Boston acquired the 25-year-old to bolster an offense led by Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown and expects him to be a primary scoring option.
Rockets
HOUSTON — Kevin Durant’s first appearance with the Rockets showed immediate chemistry with center Alperen Şengün. The pair ran a smooth two-man game during Wednesday’s preseason opener, a look that repeatedly troubled defenders.
The Athletic’s William Guillory noted Şengün might be the most skilled center Durant has played alongside, high praise considering the forward’s past frontcourt teammates. Early indications suggest Houston’s offense could become formidable once rotations settle.
