LOS ANGELES — Former Boston Celtics star Paul Pierce was taken into custody earlier this week on suspicion of driving under the influence after California Highway Patrol officers found him asleep at the wheel of a Range Rover on U.S. Highway 101, according to the Associated Press.

Troopers had just reopened four lanes closed by an unrelated crash when they noticed the vehicle, the CHP said in a release. Officers reported signs of alcohol impairment, initiated a field investigation and arrested the 10-time All-Star and 2008 NBA champion on a misdemeanor DUI charge. Pierce, 47, retired from the league in 2017 and has since worked as an analyst for ESPN and Fox Sports.

Coaching Candidates for Team USA

Sources told The Athletic that Orlando Magic head coach Jamahl Mosley and Oklahoma City Thunder head coach Mark Daigneault are among the names being considered for roles on the U.S. men’s national team staff once Erik Spoelstra assumes head-coaching duties. No formal decisions have been made.

NBA, FIBA Continue European League Discussions

Representatives from the EuroLeague, the NBA and FIBA met again this week as talks persisted over a possible NBA-backed competition in Europe. After Wednesday’s meeting, the EuroLeague issued a statement thanking the NBA for “constructive dialogue” but noted its earlier collaboration proposal still lacks a substantive response. Sportando’s Alessandro Luigi Maggi reported that the NBA views the EuroLeague’s proposed model as financially unsustainable.

Project B Targets 2025–26 Women’s Debut

Despite the exit of initial backer Maverick Carter, organizers of the prospective global competition known as Project B are pressing ahead, The Athletic reported. Co-founder Grady Burnett said the group aims to launch a women’s basketball league next fall, followed by a men’s circuit. “We’re going to focus on the women’s side at this point,” Burnett told the outlet, adding that additional projects are expected later.
