The Minnesota Timberwolves announced on Thursday that forward Joe Ingles has a left groin strain and will be re-evaluated in one week. The club’s regular-season opener is scheduled for Oct. 22, leaving open the possibility that the 38-year-old will be available when games start to count. Ingles, who returned to Minnesota on a new deal this offseason, logged 19 appearances and one start in limited minutes last year. Over 723 career games, he owns a 7.9-point scoring average.

President of basketball operations Tim Connelly—who drafted Bones Hyland 26th overall with Denver in 2021—has brought the guard back under his supervision in Minnesota. Hyland signed a two-way contract late last season and converted to a standard deal this summer. Speaking to the Star Tribune, Hyland credited Connelly for consistent support, calling their bond “a real close connection.” His role could grow after the departure of Nickeil Alexander-Walker to Atlanta.

The backcourt shuffle also opens minutes for 2024 first-round pick Terrence Shannon Jr. Reporter Jon Krawczynski of The Athletic noted that the rookie will compete with fellow youngsters Rob Dillingham and Jaylen Clark for a larger share of the rotation on a roster expected to contend in the Western Conference.

In the G League, the Timberwolves’ affiliate Iowa Wolves promoted Josh Gershon to general manager. Gershon previously served as Minnesota’s college scouting coordinator and Iowa’s assistant GM. The team also added 11-year NBA veteran Will Barton to the coaching staff as an assistant.
