The Los Angeles Lakers said Tuesday that forward LeBron James will be sidelined for three to four weeks after tests revealed sciatica on the right side of his lower back, ruling him out for the beginning of the 2025-26 NBA campaign.
James, 40, had experienced lower-back tightness during training camp. Additional examinations confirmed the nerve issue, prompting the team to prescribe rest and treatment. His progress will be reviewed over the next several weeks.
The early absence represents a significant blow for a Lakers roster entering the season with elevated expectations following the offseason acquisition of Luka Doncic. In James’s stead, Los Angeles plans to lean on Doncic, Austin Reaves, and Rui Hachimura to carry the scoring load.
Team officials remain hopeful the four-time MVP could return before the end of November if rehabilitation proceeds without setbacks. Last year, James averaged 24.6 points, 7.2 rebounds, and 8.1 assists while shooting 52 percent from the floor.
