Second-year center Alex Sarr logged his first on-court work of the fall on Monday, participating in non-contact drills with the Washington Wizards. The 7-footer, taken No. 2 overall in the 2024 draft, had been sidelined since suffering a right calf injury during EuroBasket. Team officials have consistently expressed confidence that he will be available on opening night, and Monday’s workout reinforced that outlook.

Sarr averaged 13.0 points and 6.5 rebounds across 67 games as a rookie last season.

Timberwolves

Bones Hyland delivered an early jolt in the Minnesota Timberwolves preseason opener against Denver, pouring in 18 points in 22 minutes while adding three assists and committing only one turnover. Although he currently sits behind Mike Conley and rookie Rob Dillingham on the point-guard depth chart, Hyland’s strong camp and productive debut could tighten the competition.

Hyland re-signed with Minnesota in September after joining late last season on a two-way contract. The 23-year-old has developed a close relationship with Dillingham, the eighth overall pick in 2024, noting that the rookie’s game reminds him of his own. The Timberwolves completed training camp without notable drama, a calm atmosphere that team observers believe could carry into the regular season.

Suns

Phoenix Suns head coach Jordan Ott said guards Jalen Green (hamstring) and Mark Williams are both “trending in the right direction” as they rehab. Ott described Green as “definitely progressing,” while Williams is “in a good place” during his ramp-up.

The club has not determined whether either player will appear in its upcoming preseason games in China. Teammate Jared Butler added that he believes Green is “super close” to returning.
