The Brooklyn Nets began their preseason schedule Saturday with a 123-88 victory over Hapoel Jerusalem, and rookie guard Ben Saraf seized the opening tip at point guard. The No. 26 pick in the 2025 draft recorded nine points, six assists and just one turnover while filling in for top-10 selection Egor Demin, who is recovering from a plantar-fascia tear.
Head coach Jordi Fernández praised Saraf’s poise. “He was good with the ball taking care of the ball,” Fernández said, noting the 19-year-old still has to limit fouls after being whistled five times. Whether Saraf retains the starting job when Demin returns remains undecided, but Saturday’s assignment placed him ahead of fellow rookie Nolan Traore (No. 19 pick) and recently acquired third-year guard Kobe Bufkin.
Powell expected to debut in China
Fernández added that forward Drake Powell, the 22nd pick in June, is on track to play next week when the Nets face the Phoenix Suns in two games in China. Powell has progressed to full-contact practices after missing Summer League and the start of camp with knee tendinopathy.
Edgecombe’s defense stands out in Philadelphia
In Philadelphia, No. 11 overall pick VJ Edgecombe has flashed the defensive skills that prompted the 76ers to draft him despite an already crowded backcourt featuring Tyrese Maxey, Jared McCain and Quentin Grimes. Through two preseason contests, head coach Nick Nurse said Edgecombe “caused havoc, especially in the passing lanes.” Edgecombe echoed that focus: “I pride myself on defense … I’m excited for every matchup.”
Martin earning praise in Brooklyn camp
Back in Brooklyn, camp invitee Tyrese Martin has emerged as a surprise standout. “Tyrese has really been probably the most impressive player that I’ve seen on the team so far,” forward Michael Porter Jr. said, citing Martin’s consistency in scrimmages. Fernández and Ziaire Williams have offered similar endorsements. Martin, who can slide between the one and two spots, said he is embracing the opportunity: “This is the first coach and team that actually gave me an opportunity, and I feel like I’ve held up my end.”
The Nets continue preseason play next week against Phoenix, while the 76ers resume their exhibition schedule as Edgecombe seeks to build on his early defensive momentum.
