The Cleveland Cavaliers entered training camp with minimal financial room and no major roster shake-ups, yet several new faces are already turning heads inside the team’s practice facility.

Key newcomers making quick impact

Forward Larry Nance Jr., guard Lonzo Ball, center Thomas Bryant and rookie guard Tyrese Proctor have each impressed coaches and teammates in the opening sessions, according to reporting from Chris Fedor of Cleveland.com.

Cleveland, one of the NBA’s two second-apron clubs, concentrated on complementary pieces rather than headline acquisitions during the summer. Early returns suggest that strategy is paying off:

  • Larry Nance Jr. – Back in a Cavaliers uniform after an injury-shortened stint with Atlanta, the 31-year-old has shown a confident three-point stroke, a skill the front office targeted in free agency.
  • Thomas Bryant – The 6-foot-10 reserve big man has injected energy and physicality alongside established starters Evan Mobley and Jarrett Allen.
  • Tyrese Proctor – Selected No. 49 overall in June, the Australian rookie has earned praise for his poise and ability to absorb concepts quickly despite the step up in physicality.
  • Lonzo Ball – The most notable addition, Ball has been limited by injuries for three seasons but is showcasing high-level court vision and defensive instincts since camp opened.

Players and coaches weigh in

“Lonzo’s great,” guard Donovan Mitchell said. “He’s a calm, cool presence. His IQ is on a whole other level. He throws full court like he’s back at Chino Hills.” Mitchell added that Ball’s defensive anticipation is already producing stops in practice.

Head coach Kenny Atkinson echoed the enthusiasm while emphasizing a careful workload for the oft-injured guard. “He hasn’t disappointed,” Atkinson said. “Everything we thought we were getting, we’re getting. He’s got a great feel. He’s kind of the ultimate system fit.”

With the franchise banking on continuity around its core, the early performance of this year’s supporting additions could prove significant as the Cavaliers aim to build on last season’s momentum.
