With training camps underway, seven NBA clubs have left one of their three two-way positions unfilled, giving several preseason invitees a chance to grab a spot before Opening Night.
Teams with an open two-way slot
- Brooklyn Nets
- Cleveland Cavaliers
- Dallas Mavericks
- Miami Heat
- Oklahoma City Thunder
- Orlando Magic
- Portland Trail Blazers
Most camp participants on Exhibit 10 agreements are expected to land with their teams’ G League affiliates. However, Exhibit 10 deals can be converted to two-way contracts at any time before the regular season, effectively turning upcoming practices and exhibition games into open tryouts for those final roster places.
Among the clubs listed above, only Brooklyn (Fanbo Zeng) and Dallas (Moussa Cisse and Matthew Cleveland) have fewer than four Exhibit 10 players in camp. The other five franchises each brought in at least four Exhibit 10 signees.
Cleveland’s group illustrates the conversion rules. The Cavaliers invited Killian Hayes, Chaney Johnson, Miller Kopp, Norchad Omier and Tristan Enaruna on Exhibit 10 contracts, but Hayes is in his fifth NBA season and therefore ineligible for a two-way deal. Players qualify for a two-way only if the upcoming campaign will be their first through fourth NBA season.
While many of these seven teams are expected to promote one of their own camp standouts, they could also wait for league-wide roster cuts later this month. Two-way players waived by other organizations, or undrafted free agents who clear waivers, may become targets for the remaining openings.
Even clubs that have already filled all three two-way slots can continue to churn those contracts through March 4. A player on a two-way deal can appear in up to 50 regular-season games and can earn as much as $636,435 — half the rookie minimum — if he stays under contract at least through January 7.
