LOS ANGELES — Sept. 29, 2025 — LeBron James opened the Los Angeles Lakers’ 2025-26 campaign on Monday by praising newcomers Marcus Smart, Deandre Ayton and Jake LaRavia during the team’s media day at the UCLA Health Training Center.
James, preparing for his 22nd NBA season, said the trio’s arrival gives Los Angeles the depth needed to chase another championship alongside fellow star Luka Dončić.
James Highlights Smart’s Team-First Approach
“I’ve battled Marcus for years, especially when I was in Cleveland and he was in Boston,” James told reporters. “Team comes first, second, third, fourth and fifth with him. I’m happy to have a guy like that on our side now.”
Ayton Adds Size and Athleticism
The four-time MVP called Ayton “a big guy with a high skill set and elite athleticism,” adding that the former No. 1 overall pick will form “a great one-two punch” with returning center Jaxson Hayes.
LaRavia Brings Shooting and Toughness
James described LaRavia as “a big wing who can shoot, handle and play with sneaky athleticism,” saying the 6-foot-8 forward’s versatility should bolster the Lakers’ perimeter rotation.
The Lakers enter training camp with first-year head coach JJ Redick, who is expected to deploy Smart, Ayton and LaRavia in significant roles either as starters or key reserves. James noted the benefit of having a full training camp to integrate the newcomers.
Pelinka Hopes James Retires a Laker
General manager Rob Pelinka, asked about James’s future, reiterated that the organization “would love” to see the 40-year-old finish his career in purple and gold. James, who acknowledged his eventual retirement is “coming at some point,” remains focused on contending this season.
The Lakers open camp later this week, aiming to build chemistry around Dončić, James and the franchise’s revamped supporting cast.
